At Clover & Clay, we've always believed that the most meaningful objects are the ones that live at the intersection of art and everyday life. That's exactly why we're so excited to introduce our latest collaboration with Melissa Lawrence, a Redding, CT-based artist whose work is as refined as it is personal. Melissa brings an eye for color, texture, and timeless elegance to everything she creates. Her hand-painted wine glass collection for Clover & Clay is a natural extension of that: beautiful, functional, and the kind of thing you'll want to pull out every time your favorite people come over.
We sat down with Melissa to talk about the inspiration behind the collection, what makes hand-painted glassware such a special gift, and how she's already dreaming up something truly special for brides-to-be. Keep reading — and prepare to want them all.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your artistic background?
I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember and creativity has always been a constant in my life. I am currently focusing on painting, but I spent over a decade running an online stationery design business, specializing in digital printing, letterpress, and foil-stamped wedding invitations, which really shaped my love for thoughtful details and timeless design.
What inspires your work, especially your use of color and detail?
I’m deeply inspired by nature, gardens, mashy landscapes - specifically, the way colors layer and evolve organically. I’m always drawn to palettes that feel soft and elevated, with details that mimic that natural movement and depth. I want each piece to feel refined, but still effortless and approachable.
What do you love most about creating pieces that are both functional and artistic?
I love that they become part of everyday moments. There’s something special about transforming a simple object into something beautiful that people can actually use and enjoy regularly.
Can you walk us through some of the current designs in the collection?
The collection blends classic floral motifs with a fresh perspective. Think whimsical florals, elevated nods to mahjong, and subtle, tailored tennis-inspired designs. Each one feels distinct but cohesive as a collection.

Do you have a favorite design?
The florals are always my favorite. They’re timeless and allow for a lot of variation while still feeling cohesive.
How would you describe the overall aesthetic of this collection?
Elevated and timeless with a hint of whimsy. It’s refined without feeling too serious. These are the glasses you pull out when your best friends come over and you’re sitting outside on a sunny day with a glass of white wine.

Can clients request designs based on hobbies or interests?
Yes, custom designs are a big part of what makes these special. Personal touches are always welcome.
How flexible are you with color palettes or specific requests?
Very flexible. I love working within a specific palette or vision to make sure the final piece feels cohesive and intentional and designed exclusively for you.
These glasses feel incredibly giftable—what occasions do you think they’re perfect for?
They’re perfect for hostess gifts, birthdays, holidays, engagements, and housewarmings, and they make especially thoughtful bridesmaid gifts or additions to bridal party proposals.
What makes a hand-painted glass more special than a traditional gift?
Each piece is one-of-a-kind and made by hand and it carries a level of thoughtfulness and artistry that you just can’t replicate.
We love the idea of incorporating these into weddings—how could couples use hand-painted glassware in a wedding setting?
They’re a beautiful way to add personal detail, whether used for bridal party gifts, signature cocktail glasses, welcome gifts, or as part of the tablescape. There’s a big trend toward incorporating meaningful, artistic touches throughout a wedding, and these offer something unique and elevated without feeling overdone.
Can you customize designs for wedding themes, colors, or monograms?
Absolutely! Everything can be tailored to match the wedding aesthetic, from color palettes to monograms and motifs.

Are there any ideas you’re excited to explore for a potential wedding collection?
I’d love to explore more heirloom-style pieces like classic monograms, soft washes of color, and designs feel timeless enough to be used and cherished long after the wedding.
What do you hope people feel when they use one of your pieces?
I hope they feel a sense of beauty in everyday life; something simple but special.
Where can people find more of your work or connect with you?
You can find my work online (Melissalawrenceart.com) and on Instagram at @birchandbeam, where I share new collections, custom pieces, and a behind-the-scenes look at my process.
